Reenergizing the Louisville Ballet – A Case Study in Transitioning Corporate Leadership

The Louisville ballet needed a leader to help engage the board, support the staff, stabilize the finances and prepare the organization for a new Executive Director.

Celebrating its 70th Season, the Louisville Ballet is the fifth oldest ballet company in the country. It is leading the industry in redefining what a 21st Century Ballet should be with a deep commitment to community engagement, and creating new pipelines for diverse dancers, students and patrons, all the while inspiring, delighting and challenging audiences with the onstage productions.

Overcoming Obstacles

Emerging from COVID-18, the Louisville Ballet was returning to live performance after 18 months away from the theatre, and from neighborhoods, schools and outreach.  The Ballet had been led artistically and administratively for seven years by Robert Curran but the organization was launching a new search for an Executive Director to be responsible for the administrative duties.  The organization needed a leader to help engage the board, support the staff, stabilize the finances and prepare the organization for a new Executive Director.

An Engaging Solution

Christen stepped in as part-time Interim Executive Director. In partnership with the visionary Robert Curran, committed Board and tireless staff, she helped to open the 70th Anniversary Season with a record high attendance at Swan Lake, welcome back audiences to the Brown-Forman Nutcracker and build new sponsorships, partnerships and audiences.  Boone worked closely with the Board to create new financial practices and new transparency around budgeting and planning.  The Board engaged in new ways of fundraising, prospect cultivation, donor stewardship and strategic planning.
